No injuries reported following blaze at Big Island Metal

Hawai‘i Fire Department knocked out a fire at Big Island Scrap Metal in Kona this afternoon. No injuries were reported.

Crews responded to the blaze, located at 74-589 Honokohau St., at 4:23 p.m. When they arrived on scene, fire officials say there were 30 to 40 cars on fire. Flames were knocked out by 4:55 p.m.

Smoke was visible from Queen Ka‘ahumanu Highway as black smoke billowed high in the sky. At least six people called to report the incident.

Cassidy Gallup captured a photo of the smoke from Ane Keohokalole Highway, close to the West Hawai‘i Civic Center.

It is unknown what caused the fire at this time.
